Professor CalderNutritional immunology is a fascinating but highly complex and conflicted subject area. With almost every nutrient we consume having the ability to affect our immune response in one way or another and the activation of the immune system dramatically increasing nutrient requirements, understanding the genetic, cellular and metabolic mechanisms that interact, control and conflict with the immune system and how to manipulate them to our advantage, is fundamental to optimal health.

We are thrilled to announce that we have linked up with Professor Phillip Calder, a world renowned and highly cited expert in nutritional immunology, with over 500 publications to his name. Professor Calder will be joining us as our guest speaker for our January Webinar to help us kick off what promises to be our most exciting year of clinical nutrition education yet.

In this detailed Q&A session Professor Calder will shed light on a whole host of fascinating topics from the latest research into nutrition immunology, his projects involving nutrigenomics, probiotics and omega-3s, the real science behind effective clinical omega-3 interventions, his thoughts on the best forms of lipid supplementation, and doing some serious nutrition science myth busting.

As Professor of Nutritional Immunology within the Human Development and Health Academic Unit of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton, he spends much of his professional time travelling the world to attend conferences, summits and committee meetings as an invited speaker, chair and expert advisor. He has broad interests in nutritional modulation of immunity, inflammation and cardiometabolic disease risk. Much of his work has been devoted to exploring the metabolism and functionality of fatty acids with an emphasis on the roles of omega-3 fatty acids. Professor Calder has served on many committees of professional societies and was for three years President of the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids (2009-2012). He is currently Chair of the Scientific Committee of the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism and President-Elect of the (UK) Nutrition Society. Professor Calder was Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Nutrition from 2006 to 2013 and he is currently an Associate Editor of Clinical Science, of Journal of Nutrition, of Clinical Nutrition, of Lipids, and of Nutrition Research. He is a member of the several other Editorial Boards of journals in the nutrition, clinical science and lipidology fields. Professor Calder is currently Chair of two ILSI (International life sciences institute) Europe Expert Groups and serves on the ILSI Europe Scientific Advisory Committee and has previous worked on expert advisory projects for EFSA. He is also a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Biology and the Association for Nutrition.

With such an impressive CV you’ll struggle to find anyone who is more knowledgeable when it comes to the field of nutritional immunology. Originally from New Zealand, Professor Calder’s informal, light-hearted yet highly engaging speaker style, together with his witty and entertaining approach to science promises to make this webinar a highlight of the Igennus 2016 education calendar.
