Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties, which is one of the reasons they can be beneficial to heart health and inflammatory issues. Whilst ‘excess’ amounts of omega-3 have the potential to disrupt immune function, The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) state that EPA and DHA combined at doses up to 5 g/day do not raise safety concerns for adults. It is extremely uncommon to consume such high doses on a regular basis and it is extremely unlikely that taking the more usual dose of 1-2g daily would pose any negative long-term effects.
